푸에르토리코 대학교 생물학과 교수인 트라스 K. 오렉시크(Taras K. Oleksyk) 박사는 “우리의 목표는 앵무새에 대한 참조 게놈을 작성하여 종들에 잔재하고 있는 유전학적 다양성을 연구하는 것으로 멸종동물의 복원 활동을 계획하는 데 있어서 중요한 정보를 제공하게 될 것이다. 우리는 또한 수많은 카리브해의 섬들에 서식하고 있는 아마존 앵무종에 속한 다른 앵무새들의 게놈에 대한 연구를 진행하여 이들 사이의 차이점을 지속적으로 연구해 나갈 것이다.”라면서 “모든 게놈 정보는 현재 http://genomes.uprm.edu에 공개되어 있다. 협력 연구기관들을 통해 다양한 종의 게놈 분석 정보가 축적되면 이러한 섬들에서 게놈의 진화과정을 연구하기 위한 모델로서 앵무새 게놈을 이용할 것이다. 결과적으로 우리의 앵무새들이 다윈의 되새류와 같은 모델을 제공하게 될 것이다.”라고 말했다.

Los catedráticos Juan C. Martínez Cruzado y Taras Oleksyk, del Departamento de Biología del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), dieron a conocer ayer, en conferencia de prensa, que ya está lista la secuenciación del genoma de la cotorra puertorriqueña. Este dato convierte a la única cotorra nativa de Puerto Rico en la primera de esta especie de aves en tener su mapa genético, lo que contribuirá a los esfuerzos para su recuperación por tratarse de una en peligro de extinción.
